Tips for dealing with difficult people

Difficult people. We all encounter people that might be upset, angry, or under the wrong impression of us and just plain irate. For a business person, it could be a most uncomfortable situation or worse.  Here are some tips to help you handle a difficult person.

Recommendations for Handling Angry People

  • Listen attentively without interrupting the other person and concentrate on the concerns
  • Respond to the person by restating their concerns; avoid disrespectful words and actions
  • Stay calm and in control of your emotions; communicate your needs without threatening, frightening others
  • Make understanding the priority rather than winning or "being right"
  • Seek a compromise or be willing to agree to disagree and move on
  • Choose to forgive and forget and move past difficulties without holding onto any anger or resentment
  • To lighten a situation, use appropriate humor to reduce tension and anger
  • If stuck in conversation, plan to use an exit line such as, "I understand your concerns; I will get back to you."
